Swimming: Dried Up.

Wow, bad week for working out. Tuesday I chose to skip swim class to stay home with the fam. And tonight I completely forgot. My last class and I forgot all about it. Oh well. Doubt I missed anything new. Just another workout. Damn. Probably best – my throat hurts.

Running: Nothing to Read Here. Move Along.

With Nick recovering from the flu, I wound up doing my lunchtime run at 4 today. It was absolutely beautiful. And hot. Well, relatively. It was a tough run, mostly because I was seriously unmotivated. Kind of like how unmotivated I am to finish this post…

Running: After the 10k.

You’d think after running a 10k two days prior, a run I do three times a week would be be easy squeezey. Sadly, it was a pretty crappy run today. I struggled most of the way. Perhaps my diet isn’t getting me everything I need. Need to investigate.

First 10k:

Today was The Grin and Bear It 10k run, my first competitive run. It won’t be my last. It was a lot of fun and the competition revitalized my training efforts. Nick and I both decided we must shake up our routine a bit with some races and such even if it’s just a 5k here and there. Or whatever. Just something to break up the monotony.

The race itself kicked my butt. In fact, I was ready to quit after the first 5k. I just had no lungs and my legs weighed a ton. But I pushed on and the second half was way better. The loop was supposed to be the usually one we run but instead it wound through the neighborhood. Lots of turns and streets that kinda left you blind as to where you were. It was frustrating not knowing where you were in the route and no landmarks to judge your distance. The good news was the weather was not nearly as bad as expected – no snow or strong winds. Although I did complete the race and finished strong, I missed my goal time by nearly 3 minutes. Oh well. It was my first try and I overcame the overwhelming urge to quit and that’s something to be proud of. I feel like I could really kill it next time.

I did win one of the raffles and scored a half day adventure trip for two with Wanderlust Tours. That will be fun. And there was lots of nice feedback on the logo design and other materials. The turn out was over 100 more participants than last year’s total so I think everyone considers it a success. And the woman that runs Health Beginnings officially asked me to be on the board so that’s pretty cool.

Rest Day

After two hours in the pool yesterday and the 10k tomorrow I’ve decided this would make a good rest day. Latest weather report for tomorrow at race start is calling for light snow, 35° and winds of 11 mph. Ideal for running 6.2 miles right? Today on the other hand is freakin’ beautiful blue sky  and down right warm. Well, Valerie and Jessica will have a great time on the mountain while Wyatt is in ski school.

Logged two hours in the pool today! One hour at lunch – great workout. Really getting comfortable with my breathing and timing is much more relaxed and easy. And tonight in my class they had us in the deep end so no stopping and standing if you suck in water. Also they took our fins away. Felt like we were swimming in an endless pool after that. But it’s good – don’t want to rely too much on the fins. Overall it was a great class and a boost for my confidence. I still have the same complaint though about my instructor. Not one word of feedback. I was actually watching her while I was swimming and she was not even watching me, spent most of the time talking to the life guard on duty. So the class itself is kinda pointless at this point beyond a reason to workout. Again, I’m feeling really comfortable with my breathing and stroke and want to just start focusing on stamina. I’ve got 3 months to get to 32 laps!

Running: I’m Back, Baby!

First off, thanks to  Chris and Breena for their kind words of encouragement after Monday. It was a really disappointing day. But today is another story. Went running with Nick and Amy and the FootZone crowd. I went longer and faster than ever (with now breaks). Instead of crossing over the foot bridge we kept running to and crossed the Reed Market bridge. The wind was brutally cold off the river on the back half of the run but we pushed through. It felt so good when it was over. And on the heels of a horrible to have my best yet… awesome. I really think I’m ready for the 10k on Saturday. Though, word is it’s supposed to snow. Yikes.

Swimming: Starting to Click

After a crappy run yesterday and various leg pains I was a little weary of swimming. I actually went to FootZone this evening because every Tuesday they have a different physical therapist come in and answer questions about injuries and I was hoping to talk to someone about my calf cramp as well as the soreness I have at my right hip. I also had to turn in my entry for the Grin and Bear It 10k on Saturday. Well the pt called in sick so I headed over to Juniper early and got in some laps before my class. It well great and I really had a lot of progress with my breathing pattern. The class itself is ok but I get no feedback from the teacher. The drills are good but now that I got the basics starting to click I just need laps. Need to build the stamina. July will be here before I know it.

Oh yeah, did I mention I got my wet suit? Bend Bike and Sport had a huge 50% off sale over the weekend and they had one Zoot Suit Fusion in my size. It’s normally $280 but I got it for $140 (just in case you suck at math). My first wet suit. Crazy.

Cheers.

I don’t know what I was thinking when I said “If Nick can do it, so can I.” He’s just a freakin’ kid. I’ve got 10 years on him. And suddenly, after 41 years of nonathletic activity I commit to doing a triathlon. I’m out of my fucking mind. I had a good month of solid and progress but the last few weeks have revealed a body not prepared for constant challenge. The pain in my left calf surfaced yet again today and ended my run for the most part. And my lungs again feel like those of small woodland creature. Can I complain a little more? Yes. Yes, I can. And I will. Stay tuned.

Snowboarding: Wyatt’s Ski Class #3

Woke up today pooped from yesterday but, as Nick would say, I pulled up my big girl panties and took Wyatt to his ski class. The first couple of runs were brutal but then I got my second wind and tore the mountain up to the sounds of the Beastie Boys. Snowboarding to music is a whole other experience – might be hard to do it otherwise now. I stayed strapped in from 9:30 to 1:30 when I finally had to break for lunch. I stretch out in the back of the xTerra with the lunch Val made me and my laptop. Thought about napping until Wyatt’s class was over but was too wired. Also thought about going back up but the weather was getting pretty crappy and I was getting pretty comfortable. I was relieved when 3 o’clock finally came around and Wyatt and I could go home. That’s a long day.
