The Plan was to go snowboarding at lunch today but due to a last minute new business meeting Nick and I decided to try that a different day. That meant a quick lunch time workout instead. I was gonna hit the weights but procrastinated on the computer too long so I went for a quick run in Drake Park. It’s another beautiful, warm and sunny January day here in Central Oregon and it was nice to be outside for some fresh air.
I used the RunKeeper app again and again the GPS jumped over a block at one point but only once. Looking forward to using it on my bike. If snowboarding doesn’t work tomorrow I may bring my bike for a lunch time ride over Aubrey Butte and see how the GPS works there.
Today I went for a run outside. It was beautiful – blue sky, 60 degrees. Wait, I thought it was January.
Anyway, I had another new iPhone app to try out, RunKeeper. It’s a very cool app that uses GPS to accurately track all your running, cycling, walking, and hiking activities. It tracks your speed, pace, and elevation and also records and maps your routes on Google maps. It hasn’t been 100% accurate for me, once or twice during the run the GPS jumped over a block or 2 and then comes back. But over all it’s pretty to have. I ran from the office downtown to the Old Mill and back – a little over 4 miles total.

Still hate running, though. Looking forward to the day I just dislike it. And then maybe someday I’ll ask running to go to Starbucks and over a latte we’ll discover we have more in common than we thought.
Fell short of Tuesday’s distance by just a hair but considering I’m still kickin’ this cold, I’ll take it. I did run more and walk less this time. Not sure of my timing though cause I was trying a new app out on my iPhone. Step TrakLite :
- Measures the duration and intensity of exercise, including biking and other non-step activities.
- Totals running and walking steps separately, making it great for interval training or run-walk training when you are just starting a running program.
Pretty cool although it does take a little adjustment to get it completely accurate – it was reading most of my running as walking. True story. But I was wearing it on my arm rather than on my waist and I tend to be a little stiff with my upper body and they say that can effect the accuracy. Pretty sweet none the less. 3973 total steps. 27:28. 2.6 miles.
The funny thing was that the iPhone only allows one 3rd part app open at a time so you have to first turn on the ipod app and then turn on the Step Trak, otherwise you have to close Step Trak to do anything else and then it won’t record your steps. So, you kinda have to commit to a playlist if you want it to keep recording your steps. And don’t accidentally touch the repeat button or you’ll wind up listening to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for a mile and half before you just can’t take it any longer. I’m just saying.
